Ali Baba and the Forty
Thieves (1954) |
|
aka: |
| Credits:
by Jacques Becker,
Starring
Fernandel, Samia Gamal, Henri Vilbert. |
|
Synopsis:
In this version Ali Baba,
a slave, is sent to collect a new wife (Samia Gamal) for his master,
Cassim (Henry Vilbert). But Ali Baba falls in love with her. Luckily,
he accidentally discovers the magic cave where Abdel (Dieter Borsche)
and his band of 40 thieves hide their stolen treasure. He takes enough
money to buy the slave girl from his master to be his wife. But Cassim
and Abdel have plans for Ali on his wedding night...
Shot entirely on location in Morocco using
a cast of thousands, this film was one of Fernandel's most popular.
Great pains were taken to “accurately” recreate the epoch of "A
Thousand and One Nights," but not the story.

Synopsis:
Based on the 1001 Arabian nights tale of
Ali Baba & The Forty Thieves, this movie tells of the adventures of
Ali Baba with generous twists of Malay humour and general hilarity.
This is another of P.Ramlee's gem which you will never get sick of
watching. I must have watched it like millions of times since I was
a child and I'm still watching it and no, I'm not ever going to get
sick of it. Though the movie is based on the Ali Baba & The Forty
Thieves fable, don't expect too much from it as it is supposed to be
a light-hearted version of the myth. Just watch it for the humour
and entertainment and knowing that back then, they did do good
movies even if they didn't have an original story! Along the way,
you might see a lot of familiar faces in other P.Ramlee's movies -
the extras all worked in the same movies together as they were
already friends and familiar with each other's working styles. Plus,
it was cheap too and back then, they didn't do it for the money or
glory - they did it for the love of the art! Can't say the same for
most of the people in the business now. |

Ali Baba Goes To Town (1937) |
|
Credits: Eddie Cantor Al Babson Tony
Martin (I) Yusuf Roland Young Sultan June Lang Princess Miriam Gypsy
Rose Lee |
|
Synopsis:
A movie company is doing the Arabian Nights when a hobo enters their
camp, falls asleep and dreams he's back in Baghdad as advisor to the
Sultan. In a spoof of Rosevelt's New Deal, he organizes work programs,
taxes the rich and abolishes the army. |
|
Autograph hound Al Babson
(Eddie Cantor) accidentally disrupts the filming of a movie about Ali
Baba, and is injured in the process. The filmmakers try to buy him
off, but nurse Dinah (Virginia Field) suggests he be hired as an
extra. He takes an overdose of painkillers, and his Arabian Nights
dreams combine with the plot of the movie. His name leads the populace
to think he's the son of Ali Baba, and he's taken to the palace of
Sultan Abdullah (Roland Young), who's so impressed by Al that he makes
him prime minister. Princess Miriam (June Lang) is in love with Yusuf
(Tony Martin), the leader of the peasants, while Al has fallen for
Deenah (also Virginia Field), whose father Omar (Maurice Cass) is
trying to make a carpet fly. Meanwhile, the evil Prince Musah (Douglas
Dumbrille) is conspiring with Sultana (Louise Hovick), one of
Abdullah's many wives, to capture the princess, take over Bagdad, and
kill Abdullah and Al as well. Miriam and Yusuf are unhappy because
royalty and commoners cannot marry, so Al comes up with a plan to help
his friends, but the plan spectacularly backfires, and Abdullah orders
him to be boiled in oil. ~ Bill Warren |

|
Synopsis:
A musical comedy by
Oscar Asche. A version of "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" named
after the character of a Chinese merchant who was added to the story
for reasons unclear to me, Chu Chin Chow premiered in 1916 and has
been revived again and again on the British stage (often by troupes
specializing in Gilbert and Sullivan) and is part of the common stock
of British popular culture. As an example of its ubiquity, Orwell
makes a metaphor out of it in his Notes on Nationalism. It has
been described as “the first smash hit of the British musical
theatre,” surviving for 2,238 performances and lighting up the British
theatre during the First World War. During the musical’s first run,
the Lord Chamberlain's Office became involved in investigating a
complaint of “near nudity and non-controlled breast movement.” The
film version, although probably racy by the standards of its time, is
tame by today’s standards |
