Synopsis: A classic period movie about the Roman (Byzantine) Arab confrontation. It is set in the Ottaman empire where Caesar's (Pande) Roman armies clash with the Muslim kingdoms. Ziyad (Kumar), the son of the sultan (Asooji), is captured by the Romans. Rahil (Indira), a Roman princess, falls in love with him and asks the muslim woman Leila (Sitara) to guard him. Leila smuggles a message written in her blood to the sultan. Summary written by Sujit R. Varma
Master filmmaker Mehboob Khan makes his directorial debut with this historical fantasy. Set in Turkey when the Ceasar's (Pande) Roman armies battle with local Muslim fiefdoms. When Ziyad (Kumar), the son of a powerful sultan (Asooji), is captured, Roman princess Rahil (Indira) falls for the lad and manages to get Muslim Leila (Sitara) to guard him. With their help, Ziyad escapes following an elaborate chase scene. This film was reportedly inspired by Cecil B. DeMille's 1932 opus The Sign of the Cross. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide
this became spectacularly popular and established both Mehboob Khan and his cameraperson Faredoon Irani, with whom he maintained a life-long creative partnership.
